We believe that businesses have a critical role to play in addressing the global climate emergency, and we are taking action to reduce our environmental footprint to help build a more sustainable future. In line with this commitment, we are proud to announce that our Altenmarkt site in Austria has achieved certification for the environmental management system (EMS) in accordance with ISO 14001.

The ISO 14001 certification proves our dedication to long-term sustainable development, and it demonstrates our commitment to meeting environmental standards, reducing environmental impacts, and improving energy efficiency.

“We will not only adhere to the standards that are now manageable with our full management system on environmental issues on site, but also commit to upholding these standards through yearly auditing processes,” says Stefan Leberbauer, Senior Vice President of Operations at Amer Sports.

Path to ISO 14001 certification

The process of attaining the ISO 14001 certification at Altenmarkt included defining the site’s vision and implementing standard procedures such as safety protocols and environmental guidelines. Moreover, processes were established to encourage long-term initiative development and to gather ideas from employees for environmental improvements. Additionally, sustainability awareness was fostered through training and education.

“What started as a project is now embedded in our organization and daily work. Being ISO 14001 certified lays the foundation for establishing processes, routines, and a culture that continuously drives sustainability efforts forward. It marks another step in our journey, and we are fully committed to making a significant impact,” says Ronald Schwarzenbrunner Project’s Leader and Sustainability Manager at Atomic.

From ski factory to Amer Sports super hub

Since 1969, our Altenmarkt site has grown and transitioned from a pure ski factory to a technology, logistics, and brand center. Today, Altenmarkt is home to around 1,000 employees of various nationalities and functions, working across brands, Winter Sports Operations, and Group Supply Chain.

Environmental sustainability has long been a focus at Altenmarkt. Since 2005, all heat energy has been supplied by a biomass plant adjacent to the site, and since 2014, the facility has been powered entirely by renewable electricity. Additionally, LED lighting, heat recovery systems, and waste material recovery capabilities have been installed over the past years. The ISO 14001 certification is the latest testament to our commitment to long-term sustainable development.
